There are some very good multiple beam lasers on the market. One I saw advertised today that has a super bright red LED for map reading, a white LED as a multipurpose flashlight and of course the very bright green laser pointer II for pointing out objects, day or night.

This I think is a good all purpose tool, better than a simple green laser pointer, you get the benefit of the other functions. What a good thing to have with you if you went trekking.

The product I refer to is only 5mW therefore is quite legal so no worries on that score.

Plus this green beam is 20 times brighter than the red, even though the output power is the same, the human eye sees green much brighter than other colors. It is most sensitive to low light levels in the green region of the spectrum.Laser Pointers

There is a blue LED underneath the laser switch which indicates when the green laser is on. This is for safety so you will not accidentally point the beam at yourself or others if you thought it was off.

This is a terrific tool for sky watching, it can be mounted on most 6x30 finder telescope mounts. The housing of the green laser pointer is manufactured from aero-space grade aluminum with an anodized surface which will give your pointer a lasting life.laser star lights

Amazingly, although it only uses 3 triple A batteries, these will provide about 20 continuous hours of use. This seems very economical.

There are some 5mW green laser pointers that are literally the size of a good pen, always good to be able to have one with you.

Some have an extender lens which you can buy as an extra and that gives you a range of over 5 miles, just from a 5mW!

Always look for a sturdy body to these pointers, you want metal and/or aluminum and you want a warranty of at least 6 months. Any shorter warranty should start warning bells ringing.

30 days up to 3 months - why such a short warranty, are the manufacturers expecting their product to fall to pieces the day after the 3 months expires? A short warranty does not inspire confidence in the product.

Pointers with an output of less than 1mW are classed by the US FDA as Class 2 or II. Pointers with an output of 1-5mW are Class 3R or IIIa. Any pointer with an output of between 5 and 500mW are classed 3B or IIIb. Class 4 or IV operate above 500mW and therefore cannot be legally advertised as laser pointers.

This means that anything advertised as a green laser pointer II should only have an output of up to 1mW.
